Tisha is building a wooden drying rack. The top of therack is in the shape of a trapezoid. The trapezoid’s bases are 24 inches long and 38 inches long, respectively. Tisha will add a brace that joins the midpoints of the trapezoid’s 2 nonparallel sides to support her drying rack, as shown in the figure below.

Question 1 - Math - ACT September 2023

How many inches long will the brace be?

A. 26
B. 28
C. 31
D. 32
E. 33.5

Solution

Correct answer: C. 31.
The brace will be placed in the middle of the non-parallel sides of the trapezoid, which are the bases of the trapezoid. The bases of the trapezoid measure 24 inches and 38 inches, respectively. To find the length of the brace, we can calculate the average of the base measurements:
Brace length = (24 inches + 38 inches) / 2 = 31 inches
